What is Sin?

Psalm 139:23-24
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.

This year most of my post’s have been on Empathy and what is in your heart. What God revealed to me is that many of us walking this earth do not really know what is considered Sin. I would love for you each to walk through this mini-bible study and share with me What God revealed to you through it.

In Psalm 139:23-24 David bravely asked God to show him anything offensive in him. To understand what is offensive to God we need to look for the truth. In Matthew 4 we read that Jesus was sent by the spirit to be tempted by Satan.

What did Jesus repeat in all three scenarios that we can use as our shield and weapon against the enemy?

The word offensive is defined in the bible – an act that makes someone angry by what was done. The dictionary adds upset or hurt.

 Where do we go to find what would hurt, upset, or anger God?

In Proverbs 6:16-19
 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,  a lying tongue,hands that shed innocent blood,
 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to
 rush into evil
19 a false witness who pours out lie, and a person who stirs up
conflict in the community

Genesis 4:7 is the first mention of Sin. In your own words what does it say sin is doing and what are we to do?

7b But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;
it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Sin is mentioned over 400 times in the Bible.

 The definition of Sin in the bible – to break the law of God; the act of not doing what God wants.

In the new testament What does it say About each of these Sin’s?

Be alert and of sober mind.
 Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
 looking for someone to devour.
